afternoon office workout. to switch it up a bit, I didn’t bring out the sleeves and wraps, and kept it totally raw

warmup: slow neg side raises, Cuban presses, shrugs

Closegrip Bench Press (medium rests)

bar x some
135 x 5
185 x 3
225 x 5
225 x 5
225 x 4
225 x 3
185 x 8

notes: the elbow sleeves help a lot apparently lol. so I dropped the weight and did a backoff set

Flat DB Bench (medium rests, hammer grip)

40s x 10
60s x 5
85s x 10
85s x 10
85s x 8

Smith Machine Seated OHP (short rests)

warmup with bar
bar+90 x 10
+90 x 9
+90 x 6
+70 x 10
+70 x 10

notes: kept the rests short so the shoulders would stay burning the whole time. another backoff set. I felt kinda weak today overall, so I decided to keep the assistance light and high rep

Free Cable Widegrip Pulldowns (very short rests)

7 plates x 15
8p x 15
9p x 15
10p x 15
11p x 15

Seated DB Hammer Curls (medium rests)

45s x 10
45s x 9
45s x 8
45s x 7

notes: never do these seated. felt much harder. had to stop each set when I started involuntarily shrugging them. I guess that was the fatigue point lol

5 Dec 2016

Snowstorm today. I ended up doing my workout at the office instead of at the strongman gym, just to cut down on my time on the road. Saved my sanity a bit.

warmup: slow neg side raises, Cuban presses, shrugs

OH WAIT!! NVM saving my sanity, the nice quiet peaceful empty office gym was filled with fools this afternoon! Someone plugged in their ipod and cranked up the Top 40. Its like listening to the radio… except you paid for all this garbage music YYYEEAAAHHHHHH!!! Then people hopped on the cardio machines and did it at 40%, never once being out of breath so that they could carry on a full conversation with their neighbour cardiofool the entire time! As I sat there looking at this, one guy ran over to the pullup bar, tried to do a kipping pullup (he wasn’t exhausted and forced to kip, he just wanted to look pro)… instantly kicked a bunch of equipment off a nearby rack YYEEEAAHHHHH!!!

Just screaming ninnys. Remember the scene in Stripes when they ran through the obstacle course??

So… I focused on my own stuff.

Bench Press (medium rests)

bar x a few
135 x 2
185 x 2
225 x 1
*elbow sleeves on*
245 x 2
250 x 1
255 x 1
215 x 11

notes: forgot my wrist wraps! bah. oh well, it went ok even with my limp wrists.

Dual Cable Wide Pulldowns (90 sec rests)

10 plates x 15
11p x 15
12p x 15
12p x 15

Seated Smith OHP (medium rests)

bar+90 x 12
bar+90 x 12
bar+90 x 12
bar+90 x 10

notes: I know you all love my Smith Machine 😛

Superset: Strict DB Side Raises and Full DB Front Raises and Band Pullaparts (medium rests)

15s x 10 / 15s x 10 / 15 pullaparts
15s x 10 / 15s x 10 / 10 pullaparts
15s x 10 / 15s x 8 / 15 pullaparts

notes: shoulders were dying after this

29 Nov 2016

I did a mid-afternoon office workout, so I improvised exercises as necessary.

I also kinda felt like volume, like that would be fun. Technically, I am at the point in my Cube run where I should be peaking and cutting down on number of exercises, but meh, at this point if I think extra assistance will be fun… I’m gonna do extra assistance

warmup: slow neg side raises, Cuban presses, shrugs

Bench Press (90 sec rests)

150 x 8
175 x 5
*wraps, sleeves*
205 x 3
205 x 3
205 x 3
205 x 3
205 x 3
*increase rest to 2 mins*
175 x 17
175 x 13

Closegrip Bench (2 min rests, wraps, sleeves)

205 x 5
205 x 7
205 x 5

notes: closegrip felt a bit off today. I got worried my shoulder was not in the right groove, so I moved to the Smith for a bit

Smith Machine Incline Press (2 min rests, no wraps, no sleeves, shallow incline)

bar+90 x 12
bar+110 x 10
bar+140 x 8
bar+160 x 4

Smith Machine Seated OHP (2 min rests)

bar+90 x 10
bar+90 x 10
bar+90 x 10
bar+90 x 10

DB Flat Fly (30 sec rests, pronated grip, slow negs, pause at bottom)

20s x 10
20s x 10
20s x 10
20s x 10

notes: I just wanted lots of stretch, slow reps, pauses, short rests. It feels more comfortable holding them with the pronated grip, it makes it easier to do them with arms almost straight, so higher quality strict reps.

Smith Machine JM Press (60 sec rests)

bar x 12
bar+60 x 12
bar+70 x 10
bar+80 x 8
bar+90 x 6
bar+100 x 5

Dual Cable Widegrip Pulldowns (60 sec rests)

7 plates x 25
7 plates x 25
7 plates x 25
7 plates x 25

notes: I just pumped the reps out. I knew my back was so sore from yesterday that I don’t need to worry about hard contractions, just crank out the reps and the soreness will kick in lol. The pump was strong!

19 Nov 2016

ARG… my triceps are so sore today! my rear delts aren’t sore, just tired, which is a relief.

Saturday – cold-ass morning with cold iron in my cold hands. Still teamnobelt.

Deadlifts (long rests, sock feet)

135 x 5
225 x 5
315 x 5
385 x 5
385 x 4
385 x 4

note: my forearms were already hurting, maybe I worked them harder yesterday than I thought.

Axle 5 inch Block Pulls (long rests, sock feet, extra thick axle, straps)

255 x 3
415 x 3
415 x 3

Snatch Grip Deadlifts (medium rest, sock feet)

275 x 6
275 x 6

Widegrip Pulldowns (medium rests)

180 x 10
180 x 10
180 x 10
180 x 10

notes: cold metal, rough knurling, plus my grip was dying by this point, so these shredded my hands

Frame Shrugs (short rests)

320 x 10
320 x 10
320 x 10

notes: again, cold metal, and failing grip, after every set my hands ached

Frame Static Hold

456 lb frame held for 21 seconds

notes: this was my finisher. it was intense, I took a solid grip in the middle of my palm, and I could feel the handles spinning my hands around as it slid down to my fingers, and then it was gonna end soon.

23 Oct 2016

warmup: slow neg side raises, Cuban presses, shrugs

Bench Press (long rests)

bar x plethora
135 x 2
185 x 2
*wraps, sleeves*
235 x 2
255 x 2
280 x 1, 1 assisted

notes: I psyched myself out on the 280. I thought my spotter had touched the first rep but he hadn’t, so when he pushed me to do a second rep, I kind of gave up during the grind. 280 is a new heavy weight for me, but I don’t really count it as a PR because I think the 215 for 11 a few days ago was a better lift. Still, baby steps to 3 plates. #soon

I also ditched the sleeves for the rest of the workout. They have been bruising up my arms lately.

Closegrip Bench (long rest, wraps yes, sleeves no)

245 x 2
245 x 2

Spoto Press (medium rest, wraps)

215 x 5
215 x 5

Widegrip Pulldowns (2 min rests)

180 x 12
180 x 15
180 x 12
180 x 9

Superset: Strict Side Raises & Front Raises (90 sec rests)

12s x 10 / 12s x 10
12s x 10 / 12s x 10
12s x 10 / 12s x 10

Viking Press (30 sec rests)

100 x 15
100 x 12
100 x 9

notes: instead of inverted rows I thought more shoulder work would be a fun finisher

11 Oct 2016

Evening lifts and laughs. Full strongman gym on a Tuesday. Volume DL day.

warmup: stretched low back

Deadlifts (long rests, SABOs, no belt)

135 x 5
225 x 5
335 x 8
335 x 8
335 x 8

notes: dammit, I hate dead and squat sets w reps over 6 I hate you volume day. My low back still felt sore from a few weeks ago. That lockout soreness.

Axle 5 inch block pulls (long rests, straps, SABOs, no belt)

460 x FAIL… rolled around in pain for 10 min
255 x 3
360 x 6
360 x 6

notes: OK… I messed up. I thought it was 360… it was 460, LMAO! I used 100 lb plates (#coolguy), and forgot its 100 PER SIDE. ffffuuuuuuu… I went to pull it fast and hit a weird wall, and I paused in confusion, and then my low back tweaked, so I dropped it.

Lay on the ground waiting for my back pain to die down, and looked at the bar and realized my screwup. Did a light set to see how my back felt, then went back to my 360 sets.

Snatch Grip Deadlifts (short rests, SABOs, no straps, no belt)

275 x 7
275 x 7
275 x 5

notes: getting comfortable with my feet and hands. I had to burn through these as I realized it was getting late.

widegrip pulldowns (short rests)

180 x 11
180 x 12
180 x 12
180 x 10

notes: hitting that glyco-depletion wall

DB Shrugs (short rests)

115s x 10
115s x 10
115s x 10

notes: I love you, high weight dumbbells.

Farmer Carry (medium rests)

130/hand for 55 feet
180/hand for 55 feet
224/hand for 55 feet
224/hand for 55 feet

notes: a nice finisher

30 Sept 2016

have been super busy lately doing job competitions. But I decided it was time to do some gym.

late night Friday DLs

Deadlifts (speed, short rests, SABOs)

135 x 3
225 x 3
310 x 3
310 x 3
310 x 3
310 x 3
310 x 3
310 x 3
310 x 3
310 x 3

notes: the ORIGINAL goal was speed. I immediately found out my back was sore, especially the low back when I went for lockout. So they kinda ended up being normal speed, LOL.

Axle Deadlifts – 5 inch Block Pulls (extra thick axle, straps, long rest)

335 x 5
335 x 5

notes: the straps weren’t long enough, and the axle was too thick. I could barely close my hand around the bar, and the strap was so tight it felt it was yanking my hands off. I needed 15 min in between sets just to get the color back in my hands, seriously. it was not good looking. it kind of fried my grip, ironically

Snatch Grip Deadlifts (short rests)

275 x 4
275 x 8
275 x 6

notes: still experimenting with my foot placement, grip width, and speed of lifts

Widegrip Pulldowns (short rests)

180 x 10
180 x 15
180 x 13
180 x 9

notes: I was fading pretty hard by this point, and my performance was suffering.

DB shrugs (short rests)

110s x 10
110s x 10
110s x 10

Farmers Walk – Static Hold

160 per hand held for 35 seconds

notes: my grip felt fried, so I just wanted a finisher

Inverted Rows (short rests)

10, 10, 10

20 Sept 2016

Ate all the carbs today, I wanted a monster evening session.

warmup: stretched out low back

Deadlifts (SABOs, long rests, no belt)

135 x 5
185 x 4
225 x 3
275 x 2
315 x 1
365 x 1
385 x 2
420 x 2
455 x 2
485 x 1
455 x 1

notes: The plan was to do five doubles at 385, but I was feeling froggy, so I kept going. When I went for a double at 485, the first one went so slow, that I stopped at 1, dropped the weight, and tried for another double. When the second set at 455 moved really slow as well, I know I was done with the main work. I guess a weight PR was not in the cards today. It had been just 3 days since my last DL PR, so I am not too upset.

My low back felt DONE after this, so I dropped the weights on the main assistance that followed.

5 inch Block Axle Deadlift (thick axle, Figure 8 straps, long rests)

385 x 1
385 x 3

notes: First time going even slightly heavy on Axle DL. I tried regular straps first, but that axle was just way too thick. Figure 8s fit great though.

Snatch Grip Deadlifts (index fingers outside far rings, long rests)

225 x 4
225 x 6

Widegrip Pulldowns (medium rests)

180 x 15
180 x 15
180 x 13
180 x 13

notes: back dying

DB Shrugs (short rests)

105s x 10
105s x 10
105s x 10

Farmers Walk (speed runs, short rests)

130/hand for 55 feet
145/hand for 55 feet
155/hand for 55 feet
180/hand for 55 feet

Chest Supported T-Bar Rows (less than 30 secs rest, elbows extra high and wide)

50 x 12
50 x 12
50 x 12

This workout kicked my butt early on. I was dripping wet during deads and smelly as all hell.

First day of Cube under the belt. I am scared, lol

7 Sept 2016

How was everyone’s long weekend? For me an extra long weekend! That extra long weekend lasts an extra extra EXTRA long time!! #gumcommercial

So, on the way to the gym tonight. Go to sit down in the car, and have a MASSIVE muscle cramp in my abs! Holy jeez. Doubled over in pain. Cars behind me honking at me and screaming because I am not moving forward. Fun times. I have never had an abs cramp before that I can remember, whats that about…

So I was feeling very tender in my abs all workout.

warmup: slow neg side raises, Cuban presses, one arm shrugs

Log Press from Rack (2 min rests, push press)

110 x 3
140 x 3
*wrist wraps on*
170 x 3
170 x 3
170 x 3
170 x 3
*sleeves and wraps on*
170 x 6 @RPE7

notes: last set, did not want to go to failure with all the weird chit going on in my stomach. But I am really happy with that number, because I am on pace for another Rep PR.

Superset: Viking Press & Widegrip Pulldowns (2 min rests)

180 x 5 / 180 x 10
180 x 5 / 180 x 10
180 x 5 / 180 x 10
180 x 5 / 180 x 10

Superset: Plate Front Raise & Cable OH Extensions & DB Hammer Curls (2 min rest)

45 x 12 / 75 x 12 / 40s x 12
45 x 12 / 75 x 12 / 40s x 12

notes: the tricep extensions tweaked my abs again, so I stopped there.

2 Sept 2016

Friday night. Haven’t done a lonely solo Friday night gym sesh in a while. My motivation was definitely not there, my mind was always somewhere else. I had to fight with every ounce of my willpower to get all of my slated work done lol.

warmup: slow neg side raises, Cuban presses, one arm shrugs

Log Press from Rack (2-3 min rests, push press)

80 x 3 (small log)
110 x 3 (medium log from now on)
130 x 2
*wrist wraps on*
155 x 3
155 x 3
155 x 3
155 x 3
155 x 3
155 x 3
155 x 3

notes: the AMRAP on the last set was optional, and I just wasn’t feeling it tonight

Superset: Viking Press & Widegrip Pulldowns (2 min rest)

Viking 100 x 5 (warmup)

Viking 170 x 5 / Pulldowns 165 x 12
170 x 5 / 165 x 12
170 x 5 / 165 x 12
170 x 5 / 165 x 12

notes: now this combo works! I felt a great pump in my upper back from this. I did the Vikings the same way I used to do a “scrape the rack” press from the John Meadows workouts. Gets my rear delts and traps fired up, so when I pump out some pulldowns, it all comes together in a really nice way. Magic!

Superset: DB Front Raises & OH Cable Tricep Extensions & Hammer Curls (2 min rests)

15s x 15 / 60 x 15 / 30s x 15
15s x 15 / 60 x 15 / 30s x 15
15s x 15 / 60 x 15 / 30s x 15
